The coming Friday will be very important for three individuals – Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra (ROM), Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor. The reason is obvious, the much awaited DELHI 6 is Rakeysh’s next venture after the critical and commercial success of RANG DE BASANTI and he would like to make a statement that RDB was not a flash in the pan, after the AKS failure. With this film Abhishek would like to continue the successful run of DOSTANA, after a big let down with DRONA. For Sonam Kapoor the film is perhaps her most important project, as her debut venture with Bhansali, SAAWARIYA, sank without a trace at the box-office. It is expected that the 2 hours and 18 minute long DELHI 6 will be off to a good multiplex start, more so in Delhi-NCR due to the local settings.

Last Friday’s three releases, BILLU, JUGAAD and THE STONEMAN MURDERS had contrasting performance. Red Chillies Entertainment’s Irrfan, Lara and Shah Rukh Khan (extended special appearance) starrer BILLU, released at 105 cinemas of Bombay-Thane (thru Eros International Media Pvt. Ltd.), had a dull start and the opening shows saw a weak opening at the remaining places. However, a spurt in collections was noticed as the day progressed. Saturday and Sunday saw the collections jump to 70 percent and at places even 80 percent. In the Overseas, the film has done much better despite the fact that it is Irrfan and not SRK essaying the lead/title role, the film has grossed ? 279, 448 from UK and $512,124 (with a good print average of $7,316) in the US. Sold to EROS International for 35 crores (worldwide) the distributors are optimistic about the outcome, based on the fact that the film has netted a healthy 13.50 crores in its opening weekend from India. But for that steady performance during the weekdays is very important.

The other two releases of the same week, Manoj-Hrishita’s JUGAAD and the Arbaaz-Kay Kay starrer, THE STONEMAN MURDERS, were both non-starters from the first show itself. On comparative terms, THE STONEMAN MURDERS fared better than JUGAAD. Unfortunately none of the two is expected to survive at the box-office.
