Amitabh Bachchan’s KABHI KABHIE was inspired from Sahir Ludhianvi’s real life

Yash Chopra’s multi starrer KABHI KABHIE recently completed 39 years. It was released on January 27, 1976. It is really amazing that though the movie was released way back, thirty nine years ago, it is even today as fresh as morning dew.

The movie boosts an inimitable star cast viz. Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Raakhee, Neetu Singh and Waheeda Rehman. In addition it has an exceptional romantic tale that transcends two generation.  And last but not the least the superlative music; particularly its title track ‘Kabhi Kabhie Mere Dil Mein…’ is still popular among the younger generation!

What makes KABHI KABHIE a milestone is Yash Chopra’s excellent treatment to a novel script that spoke about Indian culture about how two lovers Amit Malhotra (Amitabh Bachchan) and Pooja (Raakhee) sacrifice their love for the esteem of their parents. Years later, how destiny unites them and love blossoms between their respective children.

The seeds of KABHI KABHIE were sown while Yash Chopra was completing the climax of DAAG. During the break Sahir Ludhianvi, eminent poet and Yashji’s regular lyricist, asked him about his future movie.

Yash ji said, “Since long I have been thinking of making a movie on your poem ‘Kabhie Kabhie’  published in ‘Talkhiyaan’. If you give me your nod than I will start work on it.” To which Sahir agreed.

Incidentally, Pamela Chopra, wife of Yash Chopra and a good writer was hearing their conversation. She was excited at the thought and developed a wonderful script out of it. The romance of Amitabh Bachchan and Raakhee was inspired from the real life failed relation of Sahir Ludhianvi and Amrita Pritam.
