Madhuri Dixit was once called a “jinxed” actress in recognition of her grace and talent. Filmmaker Indra Kumar, who did films like Dil and Beta, shared this lesser-known fact with Siddharth Kannan. While recalling Dixit at one time during her early career when she was not able to manage work in the industry, Kumar, in conversation with Kannan, described the trials faced by her in the world of glamour.

Aamir Khan was hitting only with one film called Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, while her films were not creating wonders at the box office. She was jinxed. When I signed her up for Dil with Aamir Khan, it was okay. But when I took her in Beta, everyone said ‘Paagal hogaya hai tu, iski koi film nahi chal rahi'(Are you mad? None of her films are working).” One article even declared Dixit a “jinxed girl.” The article said any film with her was destined to flounder.
Though maybe a bit skeptical, Kumar decided to trust her gut instincts in casting Madhuri for both Dil and Beta. He was vindicated soon after; the actresses’ performances in Tezaab and Ram Lakhan put every critic to shame.
Madhuri became a superstar. When she came in for the next schedule of Kumar’s film, she was already a star actress. But she didn’t allow her stardom to go to her head even with the stardom, the Hum Aapke Hain Koun star was still very down-to-earth. Kumar praised Dixit’s grounded nature, stating that Madhuri had not changed after she developed into a household name. She stands today as one of Bollywood’s most iconic actresses, shedding the “jinxed” label to earn herself a reputation of resilience and talent.
