ZEE5 is set to expand its Tamil original content slate with Mammatiyaan Stars, a six-episode sports drama series scheduled to premiere on June 26. Directed by Savir Sudhakar and produced by Singaravelan under the SS Group banner, the series explores the emotional connection between cricket and its devoted fan base, placing the spotlight not on the players but on the people who passionately follow the game.
Set against the backdrop of Tamil Nadu’s vibrant cricket culture, Mammatiyaan Stars follows a group of fans from a small village who undertake a journey to Chennai with the hope of witnessing the final match of their cricketing idol. What begins as a simple dream soon evolves into an eventful road trip marked by friendship, personal challenges, unexpected encounters, and moments of self-discovery. As the characters navigate obstacles along the way, the narrative examines themes of loyalty, aspiration, belonging, and the shared experiences that often unite communities through sport.
Cricket has long occupied a unique place in Indian society, frequently transcending the boundaries of sport to become a cultural phenomenon that influences identities, conversations, and collective memories. Mammatiyaan Stars taps into this sentiment by presenting the perspective of ordinary fans whose emotional investment in the game is often as compelling as the action on the field itself.
According to the makers, while cricket serves as the central backdrop, the story primarily focuses on human relationships and the memorable experiences that emerge during the pursuit of a shared dream. The series aims to capture the emotional highs and lows of fandom while portraying the sense of community that often develops around the sport.
With sports-themed stories increasingly finding space on streaming platforms, Mammatiyaan Stars joins a growing list of regional originals that use the popularity of cricket to tell character-driven narratives rooted in local culture and everyday experiences.
The series has been written by Savir Sudhakar, Naveen Rajkumar, Kalai Selvan, and Vinu Karthikeyan. The cast includes Vaibhav Murugesan, Lavanya Anbazhagan, Venkeda Balamurali, Jagabar Sathik, Naan Kadavul Rajendran, and Vivek Prasanna in key roles. Technical credits include cinematography by PM Rajkumar, editing by Pavithran, and art direction by Tamilselvan BFA.
