The incident involving the alleged sexual assault of two minor girls in Badlapur, Maharashtra, has caused widespread outrage and prompted strong reactions from both the public and prominent figures like actor Riteish Deshmukh. Riteish, who is also a parent, expressed his deep anger and disgust over the incident on social media, demanding the harshest possible punishment for the perpetrator. He emphasized the importance of schools being safe environments for children and called for the revival of strict laws to deal with such heinous crimes.
He took to X and tweeted, “As a parent am absolutely disgusted, pained and raging with anger!! Two 4 year old girls were sexually assaulted by the male cleaning staff member of the school. Schools are supposed to be as safe a place for kids as their own homes. Harshest punishment needs to be given to this demon. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in his times gave the guilty what they deserved – Chaurang- we need these laws back in action. #BadlapurCrime”
The incident has also led to significant political and public responses. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has taken serious cognizance of the situation, ordering a high-level probe and the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to ensure a thorough investigation. Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis has confirmed that the SIT will be led by senior IPS officer Arti Singh.
The public’s anger over the incident has been palpable, with protests erupting at Badlapur Railway Station. Protestors blocked train tracks, which led to a disruption in local train services, and some incidents of stone pelting were reported. The police responded with lathi-charges and tear gas to disperse the crowds.
This incident comes on the heels of another tragic case involving the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, further amplifying the national conversation around the safety of women and children in India. The demand for swift and severe action against those responsible reflects the growing frustration over such crimes.
