Meg Cabot, the author behind the beloved book series that inspired Disney’s hit films, has shared her thoughts on the latest screenplay, and she’s clearly impressed. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cabot revealed that she has read the newest version of the script and couldn’t stop praising it.
“I read a script, and it was amazing,” she said, adding that out of the several versions she’s seen over the years, this one is easily her favorite. Cabot even joked that she asked the filmmakers not to send her any future drafts because she loves the current one so much and doesn’t want to risk learning too much before the film is made.
The author also hinted that the story has a fresh direction, saying it’s “a really fun idea” and that she is “one hundred percent behind it.” While she stopped short of revealing any plot details, her comments have only added to the excitement surrounding the long-awaited sequel.
The third Princess Diaries film has been in development for years. Plans for another movie were put on hold following the death of original director Garry Marshall in 2016. Disney revived the project in 2022, and in 2024, Anne Hathaway officially confirmed that she would return as Mia Thermopolis, who is now the queen of Genovia.
Hathaway has also spoken about the progress of the sequel, recently telling Entertainment Weekly that the team is “constantly working on it.” She acknowledged that expectations are incredibly high and stressed that the filmmakers want to make sure the movie lives up to what fans have been waiting for.
The Princess Diaries franchise began with the 2001 film, which introduced audiences to Mia, an ordinary teenager who discovers she is the heir to the throne of Genovia. The sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, followed in 2004 and became another fan favorite thanks to the return of Julie Andrews as Queen Clarisse.
Although Disney has yet to announce a release date for The Princess Diaries 3, Cabot’s enthusiastic reaction suggests that the long wait could be worth it. For fans who have spent years hoping to revisit Genovia, the latest update sounds like another step in the right direction.
