Anil Sharma’s new family drama, Vanvaas, which hit theaters on December 20, 2024, has been facing a tough time at the box office. Despite being directed by someone with an excellent track record especially for Gadar and Gadar 2, the film hasn’t been able to interest audiences much.

Starring Utkarsh Sharma (Anil Sharma’s son) and Nana Patekar, Vanvaas opened to a disappointing Rs 65 lakh on its first day. This poor opening carried over into the weekend and beyond, with the movie raking in Rs 90 lakh on Day 2 and a slight uptick of Rs 1.25 crore on Day 3. However, the film’s performance quickly plateaued, with Rs 50 lakh** earned on Days 4, 5, and 6. By Day 7, it had dropped further, collecting Rs 35 lakh, bringing its total first-week earnings to just Rs 4.65 crore net in India.

Severe Competition: Vanvaas had to face some strong competition from several movies that released this week. Those movies include Pushpa 2, Mufasa: The Lion King, Marco, and Khadaan. Not even the presence of Nana Patekar in the movie could make a difference for *Vanvaas* in the competitive marketplace.

Lost Screens: As the week passed, Vanvaas lost screens due to new releases like Baby John, which diminished its chances of growth.

Word-of-Mouth: Although it is an emotionally appealing family drama, Vanvaas did not create positive word-of-mouth, which is essential for a film to have a long run at the box office. There were no strong reviews and buzz, so audiences did not rush to the theaters to watch it.

Missed Opportunities: Along with this, the flick also missed out on going full throttle for the Christmas holiday window, perhaps the best time for such family-friendly movies. Meanwhile, films like Pushpa 2 ruled the roost and stole the show with most people going to see them first.

Expectations After Gadar 2: Given the huge success of Gadar 2: The Katha Continues in 2023, expectations for Anil Sharma’s next project were running high. Unfortunately, Vanvaas has not met those expectations and has thus contributed to the disappointing performance.
