Vanvaas, a family drama by Anil Sharma, starring veteran actor Nana Patekar, is facing a tough time at the box office. Despite star power and an emotional storyline, the film has not been able to draw significant crowds, resulting in disappointing collections.
Vanvaas produced by Zee Studios has had a moderate opening with Rs 65 lakh on the first day, while there was a very minimal rise during the weekend, at Rs 1 crore on Day 2 and Rs 1.15 crore on Day 3. Still, after a weak start, it has failed to carry forward its momentum. By Day 5, it had grossed Rs 3.80 crore, with Rs 50 lakh added on both Monday and Tuesday. The weekday trends of the film indicate a sharp fall in audience interest. So far, Vanvaas is all set to close its first week with around Rs 5 crore, and its India-wide box office total is likely to be capped at Rs 10 crore.
The plot of Vanvaas centers around Deepak Tyagi (Nana Patekar) as a widower dealing with dementia who is deserted by his children in Varanasi. As Deepak becomes disoriented, he finds Veeru (Utkarsh Sharma), the local petty thief, who subsequently realizes the plight of deserted seniors and the gravity of Deepak’s situation. The story moves on with Veeru and his girlfriend, Mina (Simrat Kaur), as they try to bring justice for Deepak and confront his neglectful children.
The emotionally and socially relevant narrative has not succeeded in capturing the audience’s attention in theatres. Vanvaas will probably fail to remain in cinemas for more than a week or two. With other releases like Baby John, which would attract some of its prospective audience, it will hardly remain in cinemas for long. Still, that is not all; the movie’s future is not all that written, as it may find another life on digital platforms and, therefore, connect with a whole audience interested in heart-to-heart stories about family and aging.
For moviegoers interested in checking out the drama on the big screen, Vanvaas is still playing in theaters. However, with its current performance, its box office journey seems to be headed toward a quick conclusion. If you are considering watching the movie, it might be worth catching it sooner rather than later.
