Netflix is taking Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory to theaters around the world before bringing the animated movie to its streaming platform. The upcoming film will get a wide global theatrical release on November 5, 2027, giving fans a chance to watch the new adventure on the big screen. It will then arrive on Netflix on December 22, 2027, just in time for the holiday season.
The animated movie is being directed by Jared Stern and Elaine Bogan, with Heartstopper star Kit Connor and filmmaker and actor Taika Waititi leading the voice cast. The story is inspired by the world created by British author Roald Dahl in his famous 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but the new film offers a fresh animated take on the familiar characters.
In the movie, Waititi voices Willy Wonka, who is trying to rebuild his life after being released from prison. At the same time, Charlie, voiced by Connor, is dealing with serious problems of his own. Charlie and a group of teenagers come from families facing eviction and decide to break into Wonka’s chocolate factory. Their decision brings them directly into Wonka’s unusual world and sets up the main conflict of the story.
The film features an impressive voice cast alongside Connor and Waititi. Kate Winslet, Helena Bonham Carter, Nicola Coughlan, Charithra Chandran, Samson Kayo and Christopher Chung have also joined the project. Their involvement adds several familiar names from popular movies and television shows to Netflix’s latest animated production.
Netflix’s decision to give the movie a major theatrical release is part of the company’s growing focus on bringing selected projects to cinemas before streaming. The studio has also made similar plans for Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, which will receive an Imax and wide global theatrical release on February 12, 2027. That film is scheduled to arrive on Netflix on April 2, 2027.
Netflix has also experimented with theatrical releases for other projects. Its 2025 plans included a sing along theatrical version of KPop Demon Hunters and a special two day cinema release for Stranger Things: The Finale. The company has also given major movies limited theatrical runs to attract audiences looking for a big screen experience.
Aron Warner and Timothy Yoo are producing Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory, while Waititi is serving as an executive producer. Sony Pictures Entertainment will handle the movie’s international theatrical distribution.
With a worldwide cinema release followed by a Netflix debut during the holidays, Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory is shaping up to be one of Netflix’s major animated releases for 2027.
