Why Young Adult Romance Novels Are Dominating Book-to-Screen Adaptations

From romance to fantasy, bestselling novels are being adapted at a rapid pace, with many more projects in development.

Ever noticed how your favourite BookTok novels are suddenly becoming movies and TV shows? Book-to-screen adaptations are nothing new, but 2026 feels like a turning point for young adult romance novels. The popularity of shows like The Summer I Turned Pretty and more recently, Off Campus, has led major streaming platforms to announce even more book adaptations.

In recent years, communities like Bookstagram and BookTok have become a powerful force behind book-to-screen adaptations. Fans go beyond simply reading, they create edits, share reviews, discuss fan theories, and even dream-cast their favourite characters. By the time a film or series adaptation is announced, these stories already have a loyal fan base eagerly waiting to see them come to life on screen.

After strong response to Off Campus, many book-to-screen adaptations have either been announced or received major updates. Netflix recently confirmed a film adaptation of Lynn Painter’s bestselling novel Better Than the Movies, while Sony Pictures has also announced a film adaptation of Lynn Painter’s Fake Skating. Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to adapt Tahereh Mafi’s bestselling Shatter Me series, bringing another fan-favourite novel to the screen.

Meanwhile, previously announced projects continue to build excitement. Prime Video recently released the first trailer for The Love Hypothesis, based on Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling novel, while Verity, adapted from Colleen Hoover’s psychological thriller novel, remains one of the most anticipated films among the readers. Other fan favourites adaptations include Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros, Carley Fortune’s This Summer Will Be Different, with many more currently in development.

With more bestselling novels coming on screen, fans aren’t just excited but they’re expecting these adaptations to live up to the books they love. For readers, these stories are more than just entertainment, they are a different world for them with characters they have spent hours imagining. Every casting choice and storyline change matters a lot to them.

As the entertainment industry continues to turn bestselling novels into films and series, the real challenge is delivering a version of adaptation that lives up to the expectations of the fans who made these books popular in the first place.
