The incident happened when the child, identified by school officials as Liam Conejo Ramos, was returning home from preschool with his father, and a photograph of the boy wearing a backpack and winter hat standing beside federal agents sparked widespread condemnation.

They were later transported together to a family detention facility in Texas.
