Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who turned 60, has opened up about his 2011 superhero film Ra.One during a candid interaction with his fans. The actor, who essayed the dual role of a game designer-turned-superhero, said the film is one of his most special projects. Directed by Anubhav Sinha and co-starring Kareena Kapoor Khan and Arjun Rampal, Ra.One was one of India’s earliest and most ambitious attempts at a large-scale, VFX-driven superhero movie.

Speaking at the fan meet, Shah Rukh said, “Because it was a new kind of film and it was very close to my heart. Anubhav worked really hard to make it. I hoped it would start a new trend in Indian cinema.” The actor revealed his intention was not only to make an entertaining superhero movie but also inspire filmmakers across the country to experiment with technology-driven cinema. “Since my position is so good, I feel it’s important to make things that inspire others. I thought Ra.One would bring studios here and open doors for visual effects in India,” he added.

While it did well commercially and was enjoyed by many for its technical excellence, it did not bring about the effect in the industry Shah Rukh was expecting. Looking at it now, he says, “It didn’t quite live up to those expectations. But as a film, it did very well. I think people loved it even then.”

The actor also felt that Ra.One might appeal more to viewers now than in 2011. “Back then, people weren’t so familiar with video games, PlayStations or iPads. Now, everyone has a smartphone and understands technology much better. Today, it would probably be more acceptable,” SRK said and indicated that the film was way ahead of its time.

When asked if a sequel to the movie was in the pipeline, Shah Rukh expressed his willingness to revisit the franchise. “If Anubhav ever decides to make Ra.One 2, I would love to do it. He’s the one who created it, and only he can make it again. God willing, if the time feels right, we might do it,” he said.

Interestingly, director Anubhav Sinha had recently shared that Ra.One’s initial reception deeply affected him.
