Bollywood box-office report of the week : 4 august 2010

This Friday will see the release of the Rajshree Ojha directed Abhay Deol and Sonam Kapoor starrer AISHA, based on Jane Austin's paperback classic, EMMA There is no doubt that the film has become hot amongst city based youngsters and is likely to do well at up-market multiplexes.

The opening of last Friday's Milan Luthria directed Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi, Kangna Ranaut and Prachi Desai starrer, ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI, was slow to begin with but showed a remarkable pick up over the weekend. Trade feels that given the business so far, the film is likely to emerge as a good success (hit in Mumbai circuit), provided it carries on the good work till at least the second weekend.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI though has been rejected in the Overseas with a poor gross of ?54,780 during the opening weekend from UK (July 30-August 1).

Priyadarshan's Akshay Kumar and Trisha Krishnan starrer, KHATTA MEETHA, had a mixed start but showed a positive and significant growth over the weekend. As a result, the week has yielded good shares but the drop in collections during the weekdays was perceptible if not alarming. During the week KHATTA MEETHA collected 5.20 crores from Bombay (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 1.20 crores from Ahmedabad (collections from 4 cinemas unreceived), 18.35 lakhs from Baroda (collections from 7 cinemas unreceived), 1.25 lakhs from Anand, 6.55 lakhs from Nadiad, 2.75 lakhs from Vapi, 4.75 lakhs from Valsad, 7 lakhs from Bharuch (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 6 lakhs from Bardoli, 3.60 lakhs from Palanpur, 1.75 lakhs from Deesa, 3.35 lakhs from Patan, 33.20 lakhs from Rajkot, 5.35 lakhs from Jamnagar, 10.70 lakhs from Bhavnagar, 3.50 lakhs from Porbandar, 2 lakhs from Botad, 1.20 lakhs from Dwarka, 2.25 lakhs from Morbi, 2.50 lakhs from Surendranagar, 3.50 lakhs from Junagarh, 4.60 lakhs from Bhuj, 7 lakhs from Gandhidham, 3 lakhs from Adipur, 38.60 lakhs from Pune (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 7 lakhs from Solapur, 4.50 lakhs from Sangli, 18 lakhs from Nasik, 10.25 lakhs from Goa, 9.35 lakhs from Belgaum, 2.45 lakhs from Bijapur, 3.10 crores from Delhi city, 41.50 lakhs from Noida, 34 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 29.20 lakhs from Kanpur, 47.50 lakhs from Lucknow, 12.25 lakhs from Agra, 11.70 lakhs from Allahabad, 2.70 lakhs from Bijnore, 5.35 lakhs from Meerut, 6.70 lakhs each from Aligarh and Gorakhpur, 3.35 lakhs from Muzaffarnagar, 2.40 lakhs from Mathura, 62.25 lakhs from Gurgaon, 29.50 lakhs from Faridabad, 3.25 lakhs from Panipat, 12.75 lakhs from Chandigarh, 4.30 lakhs from Zirakpur, 4.50 lakhs from Bhatinda, 10 lakhs from Ludhiana, 3.15 lakhs from Pathankot, 95 lakhs from Calcutta (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 1.75 lakhs from Darjeeling, 7.55 lakhs from Siliguri, 4.40 lakhs from Guwahati, 45 lakhs from Nagpur, 12.80 lakhs from Jabalpur, 8 lakhs from Amravati, 5 lakhs from Akola, 2 lakhs from Dhule, 15.20 lakhs from Raipur, 3.65 lakhs from Durg, 1.55 lakhs from Chhindwara, 2.75 lakhs from Wardha, 5 lakhs from Chandrapur, 3.35 lakhs from Khandwa, 40 lakhs from Indore, 3 lakhs from Sehore, 18 lakhs from Bhopal, 2 lakhs from Dewas, 70 lakhs from Jaipur, 9.20 lakhs from Ajmer, 6 lakhs from Bikaner, 6.50 lakhs from Kota, 1.30 crores from Hyderabad, 1.65 lakhs from Warangal, 15.50 lakhs from Aurangabad, 5 lakhs from Nanded, 7 lakhs from Latur, 2.35 lakhs from Parbhani, 2 lakhs from Udgir, 44.30 lakhs from Bangalore, 8.30 lakhs from Mangalore, 2.05 lakhs from Vijaywada, 4.20 lakhs from Vishkhapatnam, 5.30 lakhs from Madras(collections from 5 cinemas unreceived), 1.15 lakhs from Madurai and 1.50 lakhs from Kochi.

Netting around 32 crores during its opening week from India, KHATTA MEETHA is likely to be a safe bet for most of its investors.

In the Overseas KHATTA MEETHA has heavily under-performed for an Akshay Kumar starrer grossing ?250,000 UK and $490,255 from US till the second weekend (July 30-August 1).

Moving on, the Sanjay Dutt and Bipasha starrer LAMHAA goes from bad to worse. With another 50 lakhs LAMHAA has netted a poor 9 crores in two weeks from India and is a trade disaster.

Meanwhile TERE BIN LADEN is once again quite steady at select multiplexes. The film collected 70 lakhs from Bombay, 3 lakhs from Ahmedabad, (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 1.40 lakhs from Baroda(collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 3.50 lakhs from Pune, 1.25 lakhs from Nasik, 30 lakhs from Delhi city, 4.25 lakhs from Noida, 2.10 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 1 lakh from Kanpur, 1.50 lakhs from Lucknow, 9 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.60 lakhs from Faridabad, 1.35 lakhs from Chandigarh, 1 lakh from Ludhiana, 1.15 lakhs from Calcutta(collections from other cinemas unreceived), 2 lakhs from Nagpur, 2.50 lakhs from Indore, 2.10 lakhs from Hyderabad and 5 lakhs from Bangalore. Adding a further 2.25 crore, TERE BIN LADEN has netted a creditable 7.75 crore in two weeks from India.

It is now obvious that after adding the non-theatrical revenues, TERE BIN LADEN is a reasonably profitable venture for its budget.

Concluding with Anurag Kashyap's UDAAN, the film is fair at a handful of multiplexes. It collected 20 lakhs from Bombay (collections from 18 cinemas unreceived), 1.60 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.30 lakhs from Pune, 6 lakhs from Delhi city, 3 lakhs from Noida, 2.10 lakhs from Gurgaon, 4.50 lakhs from Calcutta (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 2.35 lakhs from Hyderabad and 3.25 lakhs from Bangalore. With another 70 lakhs, UDAAN has netted 3.20 crore in two weeks from India.

The film is a below average fare but will yield some profits to its makers once the satellite and other rights are accounted for.
