Peaky Blinders has officially begun production on its highly anticipated feature film, with Netflix releasing the first look at Cillian Murphy reprising his iconic role as Tommy Shelby, the formidable leader of Birmingham’s Shelby gang. Written by series creator Steven Knight and directed by Tom Harper, who has previously worked on the series, the film promises to extend the beloved Peaky Blinders story following the conclusion of its six-season run in 2022.
Murphy, whose portrayal of Tommy Shelby became a career-defining role, expressed excitement about returning to the character. Reflecting on the continuation of the Peaky Blinders saga, he said, “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me…” He added that it was a gratifying experience to collaborate again with Knight and Harper for the movie version, calling it “one for the fans.”
Though Murphy’s portrayal of Shelby helped cement his stardom, he heads into this film as an Oscar-winning actor for his role as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Along with starring, Murphy is also co-producing the Peaky Blinders film, alongside Knight, Caryn Mandabach, and Guy Heeley. Executive producers include Tom Harper, David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Andrew Warren, and David Mason.
While most details about the film’s cast are under wraps, it was recently confirmed that fellow Irish actor Barry Keoghan and Dune star Rebecca Ferguson have joined the project. Keoghan, in an interview with Collider, praised the script and expressed excitement about working with Murphy and Ferguson.
The plot is rumored to focus on the Shelby family’s encounter with new social and political challenges as they navigate their rising fame. Fans can relive all six seasons of Peaky Blinders on Netflix while awaiting the film’s release.
