Karla Sofía Gascón, even with many high-end award ceremonies on the ballot for nominations, including this year’s SAG Awards 2025, has preferred avoiding such outings. This is based on a litany of controversial past social media posts which saw her courting controversy in some of these being offensive to aspects of Muslim culture, George Floyd, as well as calls to end diversity representation at the Oscars.
While Gascón has made public apologies several times about her earlier statements, she has decided to keep a low profile, keeping away from the glare of the limelight. Her no-show at the 2025 SAG Awards, held on February 23 in Los Angeles, where the likes of Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez walked the red carpet, has only sustained rumors about her future in showbiz.

A Self-Destructive Approach?
Gascón’s withdrawal from public appearances has raised some eyebrows in the film industry. The director of the film Emilia Pérez, in which Gascón features, Jacques Audiard, called the actress’s move “self-destructive.” Audiard was disappointed at her failure to show up, particularly since the film and cast had received great accolades.
In a Facebook post on February 6, 2025, Gascón justified her decision, declaring that she thought it was for the best that her work should speak for itself. She reiterates that the journey of the film is more significant than her personal presence, wishing the success of the project to be the main agenda.
Nomination Recognition and Industry Response
Gascón was nominated for “Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role” at the SAG Awards, an award that puts her in the limelight. At the same time, the cast of Emilia Pérez was nominated for “Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.” While these are positives, however, Gascón’s absence has been made into an issue with many wondering if past behaviors will be too much to overcome in the future.
Whereas Gascón has kept quiet about her personal issues, her continued absence from prominent award shows will probably continue to be an issue of concern in the industry.
