Almost a decade since the release of Udta Punjab, the gritty 2016 crime drama that delved into Punjab’s drug epidemic, the problem is all set to make a comeback to the big screen. As per inside reports by PeepingMoon.com, Ekta Kapoor is working on a sequel to the classic movie, Udta Punjab 2. Although not much information is available, sources reveal that the movie is in the scriptwriting process, and production will start next year. Aakash Kaushik, a specialist in comic screenplay writing for such movies as Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 and Housefull 4, has been brought onboard to pen and direct the sequel.
New Plot, Old Problem
While the first one traced the lives of individuals caught up in Punjab’s drug plague, the sequel will have the same problem of the drug epidemic but a new storyline. Although the film’s association with the first Udta Punjab will basically be about its take on Punjab’s persistent drug issue, it’s anticipated that it will also have new characters and plot points.
Even though Shahid Kapoor’s character from the first one was the key to making the film a hit, it’s been reported that Ekta Kapoor wants to have him return for the sequel, although official talks have not been done yet.
Behind the Scenes Changes
The second installment will not have Abhishek Chaubey at the helm as the director, since he is preoccupied with other projects. In his place will be Aakash Kaushik, who comes from a more comedic background. This is a stark difference from the dark, hard-hitting tone of Udta Punjab.
Ekta Kapoor, who has been successful with her sequel-based projects under her Balaji Motion Pictures banner, appears to be following her trend with Udta Punjab 2, among other big sequels such as Dream Girl 3 and Veere Di Wedding 2. The announcement of these films is a reflection of the increasing trend of sequels in the industry, with several more lined up in the works.
