The official trailer for James Gunn’s highly anticipated Superman has finally landed, offering fans a glimpse into the revamped DC Universe and its new Man of Steel, played by David Corenswet. Released on May 14 via DC’s YouTube channel, the nearly three-minute trailer introduces a darker, more controversial take on the iconic superhero.
Unlike previous versions, this Superman isn’t universally adored. The trailer opens with Superman under intense scrutiny for his actions. Despite saving lives, he’s criticized for acting independently, without government approval. In a sharp exchange with Lois Lane, portrayed by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan, she confronts him with the accusation: “You entered a foreign country without permission.” Superman counters, “I wasn’t representing anybody except for me and doing good.”

This iteration of Superman operates in a world deeply divided over his presence. Some view him as a hero; others see him as a threat. His mission of truth, justice, and goodness is met with political backlash and public distrust. A montage shows the hero amid global crises, trying to help but receiving blame instead of gratitude.
Nicholas Hoult makes his debut as Lex Luthor, who adds fuel to the fire by saying, “He’s not a man. He’s an ‘it’… I will not accept that.” Luthor’s words reflect the growing fear and resentment surrounding Superman’s unchecked power.

The film also marks the big-screen debut of Krypto the Superdog and introduces several DC characters: Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen.
Titled Superman (formerly Superman: Legacy), the film is the first solo Superman movie in over a decade and is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
