Ballerina’s Box Office Struggle Continues: Can International Markets Save the Day?

Ana de Armas’ action movie Ballerina, a spin-off from the John Wick franchise, is having a bumpy ride at the US domestic box office. As much as there was anticipation about its tie-up with the hit franchise and Keanu Reeves’ cameo appearance, the movie has accumulated little over USD 32 million (Rs 276 crore) in its opening week in the US and Canada.

Budget Woes and Break-even Issues

Though $32 million might look okay on the surface, it lacks when taking into account Ballerina’s enormous $90 million production cost, accompanied by a projected $50 million advertising expenditure. Breakeven would be approximately $200 million worldwide, a tall order with its current run. In the domestic market, estimates indicate the film could end up with about $70 million, making overseas territories key to its financial performance.

International Hope and Long-Term Prospects

Following its first week, Ballerina’s worldwide gross is approximately $60 million, with a number of new international territories opening up during the weekend. Optimistically, the movie has the potential to go up to $90 million worldwide by this weekend. Whether the movie ends up at the $150 million or $200 million mark depends solely on its performance over the next few weeks.

A Missed Opportunity Despite a Strong IP

Since it has a connection to the John Wick franchise, there was more pressure for Ballerina. Better opening figures and more positive reviews might have pushed it towards blockbusters. Still, the film’s slow start indicates that labeling a movie as part of an established franchise isn’t sufficient to attract fans.

Although it may be constrained in theatrical performance, Ballerina should do well digitally and could help the studio recover costs. The destiny of potential spin-offs would most probably rest on Ballerina’s long-term success and audience reception.
