Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone has been appointed India’s first-ever Mental Health Ambassador by the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. This was an historic move on World Mental Health Day, which underscores the growing national focus on mental health.

Deepika, an outspoken advocate of mental health through her LiveLoveLaugh foundation, met Union Health Minister JP Nadda to seal the tie-up. Following the meeting, the actress tweeted about how grateful she was and how committed she is towards the cause.

On World Mental Health Day, I am blessed to be named the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare’s first-ever Mental Health Ambassador,” Deepika stated. “With our Hon. Prime Minister @narendramodi at the helm, our nation has made genuine efforts to place mental health at the forefront of public health.”.

Having openly spoken about her own battle with depression, Deepika highlighted the progress made through her foundation over the past decade. “I’ve seen how much is possible when we come together to build a mentally healthy India. I look forward to working under the guidance of Shri @jpnaddaofficial and the @mohfwindia to further strengthen India’s mental health framework,” she added.

Deepika will be speaking about awareness, reduction of stigma, and encouraging individuals to seek assistance in her position as Mental Health Ambassador. She will also be supporting government initiatives like Tele MANAS, which is aimed at making mental health assistance more readily available across India.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda received the partnership, stating, “The tie-up with Ms Deepika Padukone will help propagate awareness on mental health issues in India to a large extent, make conversation a regular thing, reduce stigma, and put mental health as an integral part of public health.”

Deepika’s joining is a landmark step towards establishing a more inclusive, compassionate, and supportive mental health landscape in India.
