Emma Stone has finally confirmed what fans long suspected: Andrew Garfield lied to her about being in Spider-Man: No Way Home. In a new interview, the Oscar-winning actress laughed while recalling how her former co-star and ex-boyfriend completely fooled her when rumors about his return began to circulate.
Speaking on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Stone said she texted Garfield to ask if he was really appearing in the movie, but his response was short and serious. “I asked him if he was going to be in it and he said, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about,’” she shared. “So I believed him! But it turns out he was totally lying.”
Rather than being upset, Stone admitted she admired how well he managed to keep the secret. “Good for him. He kept it really close to the vest,” she said. Fans pointed out that Garfield was probably bound by a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), which meant he legally couldn’t tell anyone, not even close friends like Emma, about his appearance in the movie.
Garfield himself has spoken before about how hard it was to keep the secret. After the film’s release, he joked that Stone called him “a jerk” for lying to her. “She was like, ‘You’re a jerk!’ and I said, ‘I didn’t want to tell anybody!’” he said during another interview.

While Emma still hasn’t seen Spider-Man: No Way Home, she said she was proud of Garfield and loved hearing how emotional his return was for longtime fans. Their friendship clearly remains strong, and the story has become one of the funniest behind-the-scenes anecdotes to come out of Marvel’s famously secretive world.
In the end, Andrew Garfield didn’t just protect a massive Marvel spoiler; he honored an NDA so strict that even his closest friend and co-star didn’t see it coming. And Emma Stone, ever the good sport, seems to appreciate the commitment.
