Daniel Radcliffe will forever be identified with Harry Potter-a character he portrayed in eight box office films from 2001 to 2011. With the extremely popular book series being rebooted as a television series for HBO, the iconic character will get new life via young actor Dominic McLaughlin. While Radcliffe has stated he doesn’t wish to detract from the new cast, he couldn’t resist reaching out to offer his support and encouragement.
Appearing on Good Morning America, Radcliffe revealed he personally reached out to McLaughlin after hearing of his casting as the new Boy Who Lived. “I wouldn’t say that anyone playing Harry has to reach out to me,” he said, “but I know a few people working on the production.” Because of that connection, Radcliffe decided to write McLaughlin a letter-a gesture the young actor reciprocated with a “very sweet note.” Radcliffe added that he doesn’t want to become “a spectre in the life of these children,” hinting that his intention is simply to reassure rather than influence.
In the letter, Radcliffe wished McLaughlin nothing but happiness: “I hope you have the best time, and an even better time than I did-I had a great time, but I hope you have an even better time.” Photos of the new cast have brought back memories for Radcliffe, who admits he feels very protective of the youngsters. “I just want to hug them… It’s crazy that I was doing that at that age, said the actor.

The reboot stars a new generation of Hogwarts students, with McLaughlin at the forefront in company with Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Also joining the cast are Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Hagrid, while a young cast rounds out the Hogwarts roster. Based on the seven books by J.K. Rowling, this multi-season adaptation is scheduled to launch sometime in 2027 on both HBO and HBO Max.
