Suriya’s latest film Karuppu continued its strong performance at the Indian box office with an excellent hold on Monday. The movie collected around Rs. 16.25 crore on its first Monday, showing only a 15 per cent drop from its opening day collection. The film performed even better in Tamil Nadu, where it earned around Rs. 11 crore on Monday, which was only an 8 per cent drop from Day 1.
With this performance, the total four day collection of Karuppu in India has reached around Rs. 94 crore gross. Out of this, Tamil Nadu alone has contributed around Rs. 58 crore, making it the film’s strongest market so far.
The movie is now very close to achieving two major milestones for Suriya’s career. Karuppu is only Rs. 2 crore away from becoming the actor’s highest grossing film in India. It is also just Rs. 6 crore short of becoming Suriya’s first film to cross Rs. 100 crore gross in India. Both milestones are expected to be achieved today.
The Monday collection in Tamil Nadu is among the highest ever recorded for a working day. Most films that posted similar Monday numbers had the advantage of a public holiday, but Karuppu managed these collections on a regular weekday. Among non holiday Monday collections in Tamil Nadu, the film is behind only The Greatest of All Time and Vikram. Those films went on to earn more than Rs. 200 crore and Rs. 180 crore respectively in the state.
Trade trends suggest that Karuppu may finish with more than Rs. 150 crore in Tamil Nadu alone if it continues to hold well over the next few days. The film is also performing steadily outside Tamil Nadu. The Telugu version is holding decently despite mixed audience reactions in some areas. Karnataka and Kerala both contributed more than Rs. 1 crore on Monday.
Karuppu is also being seen as Suriya’s first major theatrical HIT since Singam II in 2013. Over the years, the actor delivered several films that either opened well but failed to sustain or gained appreciation later without a strong start. Some of his well received films were also released directly on digital platforms during the COVID period. With Karuppu, strong opening numbers and audience support have finally come together after many years.
