Jana Nayagan recorded a strong extended opening weekend at the box office, collecting around Rs. 145.25 crore gross in India over 4 days. On Sunday alone, the film earned an estimated Rs. 36.50 crore, helping it maintain a steady run after its opening. Instead of seeing a sharp drop on Friday, the film remained stable and continued to grow over the weekend. Overseas, the film also performed well by collecting around USD 7.50 million, which is approximately Rs. 72 crore. This took its worldwide gross collection to an estimated Rs. 217.25 crore.
The biggest contribution came from Tamil Nadu, where the film collected around Rs. 85 crore during the extended weekend. Both Saturday and Sunday crossed the Rs. 20 crore mark, an achievement that only a few Tamil films have managed in the past. Although trade expected collections to fall sharply on Monday, the film showed encouraging occupancy during the morning and afternoon shows. Based on its trend, crossing the Rs. 100 crore mark in Tamil Nadu now looks certain, and it could even finish above Rs. 125 crore in the state.
The film’s performance becomes even more notable considering the challenges it faced before release. Jana Nayagan was originally scheduled to arrive in January, but its release was delayed because of certification issues. During the delay, the film was leaked online and was reportedly watched by many viewers before its official release. It also received mixed to negative reactions from a section of the audience. Despite these setbacks, the film still managed a strong opening weekend and delivered collections that remain competitive with other major releases.
According to trade analysis, this performance highlights the strong box office pull of Vijay. Under similar circumstances, many films might have struggled to even cross the Rs. 50 crore mark. However, Jana Nayagan crossed Rs. 200 crore worldwide within its opening weekend, supported by solid collections in both domestic and overseas markets.
At the same time, reports suggest the film has a very high production cost, with a significant portion going towards the lead actor’s remuneration. Because of this, recovering the overall investment could remain difficult unless costs are adjusted. However, for cinema owners and exhibitors, the film has provided a strong boost by attracting audiences and generating healthy business during the current period.
