Batwara 1947 Box Office: Sunny Deol’s Film Crosses Rs 30 Crore But Continues To Struggle

Batwara 1947 has collected Rs 30.75 crore net in India after five days, with the Sunny Deol starrer showing only a small rise after Monday’s drop.

Rajkumar Santoshi’s Batwara 1947 is continuing to face a difficult run at the box office. The Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta starrer saw a major drop in collections on its first Monday, followed by only a small improvement on Tuesday. After five days in theatres, the film has collected Rs 30.75 crore net in India.

According to Sacnilk, Batwara 1947 earned a net ₹2.25 crore on Day 5 from 6,608 shows. This has taken the film’s total India gross collection to ₹36.54 crore, while its India net collection stands at ₹30.75 crore.

The film has performed better overseas, where it collected ₹0.50 crore on Day 5. Its total overseas gross collection has now reached ₹6.75 crore. With the domestic and overseas earnings combined, the film’s worldwide gross collection stands at ₹43.29 crore.

Batwara 1947 opened in theatres on August 14 with an India collection of Rs 5.75 crore. The film recorded a significant jump on Saturday, when it collected Rs 13.50 crore. On Sunday, the film earned 7.25 crore in India. However, collections fell sharply on Monday, with the film making Rs 2 crore.

The latest numbers show that the film is finding it difficult to maintain the momentum it had during the opening weekend. The small growth on Tuesday has helped its overall total, but the film still has a long way to go to achieve a stronger box office run.

The film has received some positive comments for its performances. In his review for NDTV, film critic Saibal Chatterjee praised Sunny Deol’s quieter and emotional scenes, writing, “On the acting front, the man of action persona stalks Sunny Deol all through the film but to his credit the lead actor makes the most of the film’s quieter moments and emotive scenes to add a kind of weight that is far more powerful than his fists of fury.”

He also praised Preity Zinta, stating, “Preity Zinta, providing an ideal foil, also does her bit to enhance a few of the crucial turning points.”

On Shabana Azmi’s performance, Chatterjee wrote, “Shabana Azmi delivers an absolute tour de force. She does in Batwara 1947 what Naseeruddin Shah did in Main Vaapas Aaunga. She lends it the sort of depth and gravitas that instantly elevate the entire enterprise.”

Directed by National Award winning filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi, Batwara 1947 reunites him with Sunny Deol after nearly three decades. The two previously worked together on Ghayal (1990), Damini (1993) and Ghatak (1996). Produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit under Aamir Khan Productions, the film features music by A. R. Rahman and lyrics by Javed Akhtar.
