Spider-Man: Brand New Day has created history at the Indian box office by recording the biggest opening day ever for a Hollywood film. The superhero film collected approximately Rs. 72 to 73 crore gross or around USD 7.50 million, which translates to nearly Rs. 59 to 60 crore nett on its first day. As per the traditional method of reporting box office collections in India, these figures do not include 3D surcharges. When 3D ticket prices are included, the film’s total opening day gross rises to around Rs. 79 to 80 crore. With this performance, the film has set a new benchmark for Hollywood releases in the country.
The film has now gone past the previous opening day record held by Avengers: Endgame, which had remained unbeaten for the last seven years. This is also the sixth time that a Spider Man film has achieved the biggest Hollywood opening day in India since the release of the first Spider-Man. In addition, Spider Man was also a major part of the two Avengers films that previously held the record, taking the character’s total contribution to eight opening day records in India. Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe became a global phenomenon, Spider Man was already one of the most successful Hollywood franchises in the Indian market.
The film performed strongly across almost every major region in the country. Unlike many recent releases that have earned a larger share of collections from South India, Spider Man Brand New Day witnessed balanced business across both northern and southern markets. Mysore and Kerala recorded new opening day records by comfortable margins. Several Hindi speaking regions, including East Punjab, Bihar, Odisha and Assam, also either set new records or came very close. Delhi and Uttar Pradesh are also expected to challenge the existing record. Tamil Nadu was one of the few markets where the film could not achieve a record because several premium screens continued to show Jana Nayagan. Mumbai remained behind Avengers Endgame, while Andhra Pradesh and Telangana finished below the record held by Avatar: The Way of Water.
The film has already secured strong advance bookings for the rest of the extended weekend. While a slight drop in collections on the second day is considered normal, business is expected to rise again on Saturday. Industry estimates suggest that the film could collect around Rs. 275 crore gross, or approximately Rs. 225 crore nett, during its four day extended weekend. If achieved, this would comfortably surpass the Rs. 192 crore three day weekend collection of Avengers Endgame.
Following its record breaking start, Spider Man Brand New Day has also entered the race to become the highest grossing Hollywood film ever released in India. The current lifetime record belongs to Avatar: The Way of Water, which earned Rs. 465 crore gross or Rs. 381 crore nett. With strong audience response and impressive advance bookings, the latest Spider Man film has given itself a realistic opportunity to challenge that milestone in the coming weeks.
