The trailer of The Sabarmati Report merely presents a glimpse into an engaging, suspenseful narrative based on the search for a journalist for the truth behind the Sabarmati train incident, which was an incident that shook India’s social and cultural scene. It stars Vikrant Massey, Raashii Khanna, and Ridhi Dogra as part of the lead cast, where the film explores issues of ethics and ideological turmoil in journalism, where accountability, the role of truth, and media perception are all treated as important themes.
Vikrant Massey plays a zealous journalist prompted by the character of Ridhi Dogra to challenge the status quo traditionally assigned by the mainstream media. Stuck in his way of believing, he challenges his contemporaries by criticizing their approach to follow sensational stories rather than doing a complete study of things. His character transforms from an English-centric reportage to a much deeper and localized reportage signal perspective shifting, hence is a clash between a Westernized reporting in the English language and very down-to-earth reporting in Hindi.
Along with Raashii Khanna, with whom he starts an affair, he peels away layers of complexity around the Sabarmati incident that challenges them at the edge of their profession. It is this ideological clash that forms the core of the movie. The protagonist struggles to face what unforeseen consequences await him when he forces open a national system’s lid of such unpleasant truths.
