Bollywood actress Dia Mirza has spoken openly about a major decision she made early in her career when she chose to step away from the film industry despite enjoying success and financial stability. During an appearance on Soha Ali Khan’s podcast “All About Her,” the actress reflected on taking a break at the age of 24 to reconnect with herself and reassess what truly made her happy.
Dia explained that while her career was progressing well and she had achieved financial independence, she felt disconnected from the work she was doing. Looking back, she said that the experience helped her better understand herself and her purpose.
Sharing her thoughts on the podcast, Dia said, “Like many, I was also sucked into the world of commodification, and as a model, my primary job was really to sell everything. And, it’s very interesting because I felt so dichotomous. In fact, I felt conflicted even in so many parts I was playing because I realized that they carry the integrity or the intelligence or the ethos that I carried. And I was not able to embody that spirit in the parts that I was playing at some level or the other; then what was I standing for?”
The actress revealed that she decided to take a break in 2005, a period many people considered the peak of her career. She explained that despite achieving professional success, she no longer enjoyed what she was doing.
Dia shared, “I stepped back in 2005. I took a 2-year sabbatical at what is considered your prime. I was 24. And I said I don’t like what I am doing. I am not having fun. I have made money. I am independent; I have a home I can call my own in a city that is now mine because it embraced me, and I don’t have to worry about my bills, but this is not making me happy. And that’s when I realized I needed to go back to myself. So, it was like a homecoming of sorts.”
Dia Mirza made her Bollywood debut with “Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein,” a film that later gained a strong fan following. She went on to appear in several successful movies, including “Dus,” “Lage Raho Munna Bhai,” “Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd,” “Shootout at Lokhandwala,” and “Kurbaan.”
In recent years, she has continued to earn appreciation for her performances in films such as “Sanju” and “Thappad.” Her latest comments offer a glimpse into the personal challenges she faced behind the success and the importance she placed on finding happiness and self fulfilment beyond professional achievements
