For more than 50 years, Yash Raj Films has successfully explored almost every major Bollywood genre. Romance became its identity, action found a new home with the Spy Universe, while comedy, drama and thrillers have all featured prominently in its filmography. There has, however, always been one glaring omission: horror.
That may finally be about to change. Industry reports suggest that YRF is gearing up to produce its first-ever horror film, with Varun Dhawan set to headline the project. While the studio is yet to make an official announcement, the reported combination has already generated considerable excitement among Bollywood followers and, especially, Varun’s fans.
The film is reportedly being directed by Abhay Pannu, the acclaimed creator of Rocket Boys. Interestingly, this will mark his theatrical directorial debut, and he has also written the screenplay himself. Reports further state that YRF CEO Akshaye Widhani played a key role in bringing the project together, with production expected to begin later this year and a 2027 theatrical release being planned.
Varun Dhawan is no stranger to supernatural cinema, having won audiences over with Bhediya. However, that film blended horror with comedy. The new YRF venture is reportedly envisioned as a pure horror film, giving Varun an opportunity to explore a darker and more intense space than audiences have seen him in before.
The project also reunites Varun with Yash Raj Films after Sui Dhaaga: Made in India. That film showcased a grounded, emotional side of the actor. If these reports hold true, the untitled horror film could reveal yet another dimension of his versatility.
Despite producing some of Hindi cinema’s biggest blockbusters, the Aditya Chopra-led banner has never ventured into horror. Considering how the genre has evolved over the last few years and found renewed commercial success with Indian audiences, the timing feels significant. Rather than following the recent trend of horror comedies, reports suggest YRF is looking at a more straightforward horror experience, something the banner has never attempted before.
As of now, the title, storyline and supporting cast remain tightly under wraps, and the makers have not officially confirmed the project. Until that happens, the development should be viewed as a strong industry buzz rather than a formal announcement.
