Oscar-winning filmmaker Bong Joon Ho is officially diving into animation and he’s bringing a huge cast with him. The director’s first animated feature film, Ally, has revealed an impressive voice lineup that includes Bradley Cooper, Ayo Edebiri, Dave Bautista, Finn Wolfhard, Alex Jayne Go, Rachel House and Werner Herzog. The film has been in development since 2019 and marks Bong’s first major animated project following the global success of Parasite.
According to the official synopsis, Ally follows a curious piglet squid living deep in the South Pacific Ocean. Dreaming of one day seeing sunlight and becoming the star of a wildlife documentary, Ally’s life changes after a mysterious aircraft crashes into the ocean, forcing her into an unexpected adventure alongside a group of unusual companions.
The screenplay was co-written by Bong and filmmaker Jason Yu.
Production company Neon has acquired North American distribution rights, continuing its successful partnership with Bong after distributing Parasite.
The film is being co-financed and distributed internationally by CJ ENM, Penture Invest and Pathé.
Seo Woo-sik is producing the project, which is expected to be completed during the first half of 2027 before releasing later that year.
While plot details remain limited, the casting alone has already sparked excitement online, especially with Bong blending Hollywood stars, indie favorites and acclaimed international talent into one animated feature.
Fans are particularly intrigued by Herzog’s involvement, given the legendary filmmaker’s famously distinctive voice and storytelling style.
After genre-defining films like Snowpiercer, Okja and Parasite, many are already expecting Ally to become one of the most anticipated animated releases of 2027.
