Not only does this mark the biggest opening of 2025 so far, it also dethrones The Super Mario Bros. Movie for the highest-ever launch of a video game adaptation. With a $60 million Saturday alone, the biggest single-day haul in Warner Bros. history (unadjusted), it even outpaced the opening of Barbie to become the studio’s largest domestic debut since Batman v Superman in 2016.

What makes this feat even more impressive is the film’s ability to turn pixelated nostalgia into a cinematic spectacle. Even in China, where Hollywood films have struggled recently, Minecraft debuted at No. 1 with $14.6 million, the biggest Hollywood launch of the year in that market.
This unexpected blockbuster might just be the much-needed turning point for the 2025 box office.
