Much-anticipated fantasy film Barroz starring Mohanlal hit theatres yesterday on Christmas day. Even though it had a festival benefit, the film could garner only an underwhelming opening day collection of ₹3.65 crore net at the Indian box office.

Directed by Mohanlal himself, Barroz has been appreciated for the magnificent visuals but panned for its treatment. Mixed reviews have been seen to have watered down the film’s performance, which was not further helped by the fact that the competition from Unni Mukundan’s Marco was a better bet which raked in ₹4.30 crore net on day one.

Barroz had a reasonable morning show with 49%, which improved in the afternoons and evenings. It picked up well, but failed to maintain that pace into night shows, which has affected the numbers, of course.

Comparatively, another Mohanlal release from earlier this year,Malaikottai Vaaliban, released at ₹5.65 crore net on the day one. Thus, by comparison,Barroz’s performance was a whopping 35% weaker.

The film features Maya Rao West and Tuhin Menon in main roles based on the novel Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure by Jijo Punnoose. This fantasy adventure, made on a huge budget of ₹80 crore, has reportedly been produced by Antony Perumbavoor.

Given the high production cost, the opening day numbers are disappointing. The film now faces the challenge of maintaining strong weekday collections to recover its investment. With word-of-mouth crucial for its survival, Barroz’s journey ahead at the box office remains uncertain.
