A Different World Trailer: Whitley And Dwayne’s Daughter Heads To Hillman College

Netflix has released the A Different World trailer, introducing a new Hillman College generation while Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison and others return.

Netflix has released the official trailer for A Different World, giving viewers a first detailed look at the new generation of students arriving at the fictional Hillman College. The 10 episode sequel series will premiere on Netflix on September 24, 2026.

The new series follows Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon. She is the youngest daughter of Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne, two characters who were central to the original show. While Deborah already has a connection to Hillman through her parents, the new series will focus on her own experiences rather than simply repeating their story.

Deborah is described as a free spirited young woman who enjoys attention and is still trying to understand what she wants from life. Her journey at Hillman will introduce her to a new group of students with different backgrounds, interests and personal challenges.

The new group also includes Rashida Duvall, played by Alijah Kai. She is a first generation criminal justice student. Cornell Young IV plays Shaquille Johnson, a five star athlete who decides to attend Hillman because of the college’s history and reputation.

Jordan Aaron Hall plays Amir Rodale, a psychology student who is good at helping other people deal with their problems but struggles with his own. Kennedi Reece plays Hazel Henry, a student from a small town who was raised in the church and begins developing her own beliefs and values.

Chibuikem Uche plays Kojo Achebe, a Ghanaian Nigerian fashion entrepreneur who is working to gain the confidence needed to follow his own ideas.

The sequel will also feature several familiar faces from the original series. Jasmine Guy returns as Whitley Gilbert, while Kadeem Hardison reprises his role as Dwayne Wayne. Cree Summer returns as Freddie Brooks and Darryl M. Bell is back as Ron Johnson.

Their return connects the new series directly to the original A Different World, while the younger characters remain at the center of the story.

The original series ran for six seasons from 1987 to 1993 and followed students at the fictional historically Black Hillman College. The Netflix sequel will continue using the same college setting while focusing on a new generation of Black college students.

A Different World will premiere on Netflix on September 24, 2026. The first season will have 10 single camera episodes, with each episode running for approximately half an hour.
