Telugu star Vijay Deverakonda’s latest film Kingdom has kicked off with an impressive ₹32 crore worldwide gross on its opening day, including preview shows. Of this, approximately ₹18.50 crore came from the domestic Indian market, while ₹13.50 crore (USD 1.6 million) came from overseas making it the highest global opening for Deverakonda to date.
In India, however, Kingdom fell just short of surpassing Deverakonda’s previous film Liger, especially considering ticket price hikes in Andhra Pradesh. The film grossed ₹14.50 crore in the Telugu states, with Hyderabad, Vizag, and Vijayawada performing the best, as expected for a Vijay Deverakonda release. Smaller towns showed an improvement over Kushi, but still lagged behind Liger.
In Karnataka, Kingdom performed solidly, particularly in Bengaluru, bringing in ₹2 crore. The film also released in Tamil and Hindi dubbed versions. While the Tamil version fared better than most Telugu films in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, it remained limited in reach. The Hindi version, however, was a token release and performed poorly, nearing a complete washout.
Despite the strong opening, Kingdom faces an uphill battle financially due to its high production costs. Even with significant non-theatrical recoveries, the theatrical performance needs to be strong in the coming days. The initial audience reception appears mixed, making sustained success at the box office a challenge.
