Global star Priyanka Chopra Jonas has made a much-awaited return to music after nearly a decade with her vibrant Indian-inspired rendition of Wham!’s holiday classic “Last Christmas.” The track features in the upcoming festive film Christmas Karma, directed by Gurinder Chadha, best known for Bend It Like Beckham and Blinded by the Light. The movie is set to release in the UK, Ireland, and the US on November 14.
This marks Priyanka’s first major music release since her 2014 single I Can’t Make You Love Me. Over the years, she also lent her voice to Bollywood songs such as Chaoro from Mary Kom (2014) and the title track of Dil Dhadakne Do (2015) before shifting her focus entirely to acting. Her comeback song — a fusion of Western pop and Indian musical elements — has already taken social media by storm.
Clips of the track circulating online have sparked mixed reactions. While some fans praised the creativity behind the “desi-fied” version, others criticized the arrangement. Comments ranged from “She killed the song — literally murdered it” to “The bhangra in between is sending me to Mars.” Yet, several fans expressed admiration, with one user writing, “I actually like her version — it’s festive and fun.”
Speaking to The Times of India, Priyanka shared her excitement about collaborating with Gurinder Chadha: “Gurinder is one of the few filmmakers who continues to tell Indian diaspora stories with great honesty and emotion. She’s a dear friend, and I’m delighted to support her through Christmas Karma. I hope this desi take on a song that’s been the soundtrack to so many Christmases connects with listeners.”
