Prime Video has officially unveiled the first look at Sophie Turner as Lara Croft in its upcoming Tomb Raider series, and the internet is already in meltdown mode. The streaming platform shared a wardrobe test image on Instagram, confirming Turner’s transformation into the legendary video game adventurer. The caption read, “Get your artifacts out. Lara’s on her way… #TombRaider #WardrobeTest,” instantly igniting fan debate across social media.
In the released still, Turner wears a green fitted top, black shorts, and dark sunglasses — a modern spin on Lara Croft’s iconic outfit. The look aims to balance classic nostalgia with contemporary style, but reactions have been anything but unanimous.
Many fans celebrated the casting and visual reveal. Comments poured in praising Turner’s appearance, calling it “classic-coded” and “a perfect transformation.” Several users expressed excitement that the show appears to honor the original Lara Croft aesthetic, with one fan writing, “This is just a wardrobe test and she already looks unreal.” Others voiced optimism that Turner could redefine the character for a new generation.
However, not everyone was convinced. Nostalgia for Angelina Jolie’s portrayal in the early 2000s films loomed large, with fans declaring Jolie as the “forever Lara.” Some questioned whether Turner possesses the commanding physicality associated with the character, suggesting her features felt too soft or refined for the rugged tomb raider image. A few even speculated whether the image had been digitally enhanced or AI-generated, reflecting how polarizing the reveal has become.
Despite the divided response, anticipation for the series continues to grow. The Prime Video adaptation boasts an impressive ensemble cast. Sigourney Weaver plays Evelyn Wallis, a powerful figure seeking to manipulate Lara’s abilities. Jason Isaacs appears as Atlas DeMornay, Lara’s uncle, while Bill Paterson takes on the role of Winston, the Croft family’s loyal butler. Martin Bobb-Semple joins as Zip, Lara’s tech-savvy confidant. Additional cast members include Celia Imrie, Sasha Luss, Jack Bannon, Paterson Joseph, Juliette Motamed, John Heffernan, and August Wittgenstein.
The series is created and written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who also serves as executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Chad Hodge. Direction is led by Jonathan Van Tulleken, with production handled by Amazon MGM Studios in partnership with Crystal Dynamics and Legendary Television. An official release date has yet to be announced.
Whether Sophie Turner’s Lara Croft wins over skeptics or sparks further controversy, one thing is certain — Tomb Raider has already secured the spotlight.
