Raajneeti 2 Incoming? Prakash Jha Teases Epic Sequel with Ranbir Kapoor & Katrina Kaif!

Prakash Jha confirms Raajneeti 2 is in development, with the sequel continuing to draw inspiration from Indian epics like the Mahabharata.

More than a decade after the release of the political drama Raajneeti (2010), filmmaker Prakash Jha has confirmed that a sequel to the film is currently in development. The director recently revealed in an interview that work on Raajneeti 2 has begun, and the project is presently in the pre-production stage. The upcoming film is expected to continue the thematic approach of the original, drawing inspiration from Indian epics and mythological narratives.

Released in 2010, Raajneeti was a political thriller that explored power struggles within a political family. The film presented a modern-day narrative influenced by the themes and characters of the ancient Indian epic Mahabharata. Through its complex storytelling, the film portrayed political rivalries, loyalty, betrayal, and ambition within the backdrop of electoral politics.

The movie featured a large ensemble cast led by Ranbir Kapoor and included actors such as Nana Patekar, Ajay Devgn, Katrina Kaif, Arjun Rampal, Manoj Bajpayee, Sarah Thompson, and Naseeruddin Shah. The film performed well commercially and was widely discussed for its narrative structure and its parallels with mythological characters and events.

In his recent interaction with media outlet SCREEN, Prakash Jha confirmed that he has started actively working on Raajneeti 2. According to the filmmaker, the sequel will continue to draw elements from Indian epics and mythological traditions, similar to the first film. He explained that the new story will also borrow thematic aspects, character inspirations, and certain narrative structures from such sources.

Jha stated that several ideas in the sequel have been shaped by references to epic literature and mythology. This approach was a defining feature of the original film, where several characters were loosely inspired by figures from the Mahabharata, including Arjuna, Krishna, and Draupadi. By using these influences, the film blended traditional mythological themes with contemporary political storytelling.

The filmmaker also mentioned another concept he had once explored that was inspired by Draupadi, one of the central characters in the Mahabharata. Jha revealed that he had previously worked on a story titled Panchali, which was based on the mythological figure also known as Draupadi. Although that project did not move forward at the time, he noted that the idea had been of significant interest to him.

Discussions about a sequel to Raajneeti had surfaced earlier as well. In 2024, during an event marking 15 years since the release of the original film, Prakash Jha had hinted that the possibility of a second installment was being explored. At the time, he stated that while the project had long been planned, there were no confirmed details regarding casting or filming schedules.

As of now, the director has not announced the final cast for Raajneeti 2, and it remains unclear whether actors from the original film will reprise their roles. However, the confirmation that work has begun on the project suggests that development is progressing.

Meanwhile, several actors associated with the original film are currently involved in other major projects. Ranbir Kapoor, who played one of the central characters in Raajneeti, is set to portray the mythological figure Lord Rama in the upcoming film Ramayana, directed by Nitesh Tiwari. The film also features actors Sai Pallavi and Yash.

In addition to that project, Ranbir Kapoor will also appear in Love & War, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The film stars Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal alongside him.

Although detailed information about the storyline and production schedule of Raajneeti 2 has not yet been revealed, the director’s confirmation indicates that the political drama franchise may soon return with a new narrative shaped by mythological influences and contemporary themes.
