Nick Cannon Remembers Late Son Zen With Heartbreaking Birthday Tribute: “We Love You”

Nick Cannon honored his late son Zen on what would have been his fifth birthday with an emotional family celebration and a touching message about love, loss and healing.

Some birthdays are celebrated with balloons and cake. Others become a reminder of love that never fades. Nick Cannon marked what would have been his son Zen’s fifth birthday with an emotional gathering surrounded by family and close friends, sharing a heartfelt glimpse into a day dedicated to remembrance rather than grief. The television host posted a series of intimate photos from the celebration, paying tribute to the little boy whose life continues to inspire his family years after his passing.

“Zen’s Light will forever shine in our hearts. We love you my son,” Cannon wrote alongside the images, describing the occasion as a celebration of his son’s life instead of focusing on the tragedy of his loss.

The tribute came just days after Cannon also shared a birthday message for Zen, calling him their “Young King” and writing that his family continues to turn pain into purpose. He reflected on their belief that although Zen is no longer physically present, his spirit remains a constant part of their lives.

Zen, whom Cannon shared with Alyssa Scott, died in December 2021 at just five months old after battling an aggressive form of brain cancer. Cannon first revealed his son’s diagnosis after doctors discovered a malignant brain tumor and fluid building in his head, making the loss one of the most difficult moments of his life.

Rather than letting that heartbreak define them, Cannon and Scott established the Zen’s Light Foundation in 2022. The nonprofit supports pediatric healthcare, grief resources and families facing childhood illnesses, ensuring that Zen’s legacy extends far beyond his short life. The foundation has also launched fundraising initiatives, including a commemorative candle campaign, with proceeds helping children and parents navigating similar medical challenges.

Now a father of 12, Cannon has repeatedly spoken about how losing Zen transformed his perspective on family and fatherhood. His annual birthday tributes have become less about mourning and more about celebrating the joy Zen brought into their lives, while encouraging others experiencing loss to find hope through community and compassion.

This year’s gathering carried that same message. While the photos captured smiles, embraces and togetherness, Cannon’s words made it clear that some bonds never disappear. For him, every birthday is another reminder that Zen’s light continues to shine through the family, the foundation and the lives it continues to touch.
