Filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan recently spoke about her long-standing professional and personal relationship with actor Shah Rukh Khan, offering insights into what he was like during the early years of his career. The two have shared a close association for decades and have collaborated on numerous films and songs since the 1990s. During a conversation with content creator Ranveer Allahbadia, Farah reflected on her first impressions of the actor, recalling that before working with him she had formed a very different image of his personality based on interviews she had read at the time.
Their professional relationship dates back to the 1994 film Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, which marked the first time Farah choreographed a song for Shah Rukh Khan. The collaboration eventually developed into a long creative partnership that produced several well-known films and musical sequences in Hindi cinema. Over the years, Farah directed Shah Rukh Khan in films such as Main Hoon Na, Om Shanti Om, and Happy New Year, while also choreographing many of his popular songs. Their frequent collaborations and visible camaraderie have made them one of the more notable actor-director partnerships in the industry.
During the interview, Farah explained that she did not personally know Shah Rukh Khan before working with him on Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. At the time, her perception of him was largely shaped by magazine interviews and public statements she had come across. According to her, those early interviews made him appear outspoken and somewhat brash. She recalled that some of his remarks in those conversations were unusually blunt for a young actor who had only recently entered the film industry. This led her to initially believe that he had a very bold and confrontational personality.
Farah said that after she began working with him, she realised that the impression she had formed earlier did not fully match the person she encountered on set. She noted that although Shah Rukh Khan was indeed very competitive, his competitiveness was not directed toward overshadowing others or seeking individual attention. Instead, she described it as a kind of motivation aimed at ensuring that the film itself performed well. According to Farah, this approach influenced how he behaved during collaborative work, especially when sharing scenes with other actors.
She explained that even in the 1990s he displayed a strong desire to ensure that a project succeeded as a whole rather than focusing solely on his own performance. Farah observed that when acting alongside other performers, Shah Rukh Khan would often help them during scenes rather than attempt to dominate the moment. In her view, his competitiveness was about the overall success of the film rather than about personal recognition.
Farah also commented on his work ethic, noting that despite becoming one of the most prominent stars in the Hindi film industry, he has remained relatively unchanged in his professional attitude. She described him as someone who does not display the typical mannerisms often associated with superstardom. According to her, he continues to behave in a straightforward and approachable manner while working on film sets. She added that he treats colleagues and crew members with the same level of respect regardless of his status.
Another aspect she highlighted was his commitment to hard work. Farah remarked that even after decades of success, Shah Rukh Khan continues to approach his work with the same intensity he had during the early phase of his career. In fact, she suggested that he may be working even harder now than he did in the past. For her, this consistency has been one of the defining characteristics of his personality throughout their long association.
Reflecting on the nature of competitiveness in the film industry, Farah suggested that Shah Rukh Khan’s approach offers a useful perspective for actors. She emphasised that he has always prioritised the success of the film rather than focusing solely on personal recognition. In her view, this mindset contributes to stronger collaboration and ultimately benefits everyone involved in a project.
Through her recollections, Farah Khan provided a glimpse into the professional dynamic she has shared with Shah Rukh Khan since their early collaboration. Her comments highlighted how initial public perceptions of a celebrity can sometimes differ from the reality experienced by colleagues who work closely with them.
