Warner Bros. has officially announced a new release date for the upcoming film Animal Friends, a live action and animated adventure starring Ryan Reynolds and Jason Momoa. The movie is now set to release in theatres on January 22, 2027. This comes after several changes in its schedule, as it was earlier planned for release in May 2026 and before that in October 2025.
Animal Friends is directed by Peter Atencio and written by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider. The film is expected to be a fun road trip story that mixes human characters with animated animals. It aims to deliver comedy, adventure and a family friendly experience that audiences of all ages can enjoy.
The movie is being produced by major companies including Legendary Entertainment, Maximum Effort and Prime Focus Studios, while Warner Bros will handle its release worldwide. Interestingly, the project was first being developed at Sony Pictures but later moved to Warner Bros in 2024 as part of a larger deal with Legendary Entertainment.
The film features a strong and popular cast. Along with Ryan Reynolds and Jason Momoa, it also stars Aubrey Plaza, Addison Rae, Dan Levy, Lil Rel Howery and Ellie Bamber. With such a wide range of actors, the film is expected to offer both humor and engaging performances.
Director Peter Atencio is known for his work in comedy films like Keanu and The Machine, as well as the series The Afterparty. His experience in handling humor and storytelling is likely to bring a lively and entertaining feel to Animal Friends.
Both lead actors are also busy with other big projects. Ryan Reynolds was recently seen in Deadpool and Wolverine, one of the biggest films of 2024, and will next appear in Mayday. Jason Momoa has also been working on several major films including A Minecraft Movie, Supergirl, Street Fighter and Dune Part Three.
Overall, even though the release has been delayed, Animal Friends continues to build excitement with its unique concept, strong cast and promise of a fun cinematic experience.
