The musical biopic Michael continued its impressive run at the Indian box office in the third week. The film collected Rs. 1.65 crore on its third Friday, showing a jump of 5 per cent compared to the previous day. However, the collection was still 60 per cent lower than the second Friday numbers. With this, the movie’s total collection in India has reached Rs. 53.45 crore gross.
The film had already posted a strong first week collection of Rs. 31.25 crore. In the second week, the movie remained steady and added good numbers over the weekend. It collected Rs. 4.00 crore on second Friday, followed by Rs. 4.50 crore on Saturday and Rs. 5.00 crore on Sunday. The collections later slowed during the weekdays, but the movie still managed to hold decent momentum at the ticket windows.
Trade estimates suggest that Michael may collect around Rs. 5 to 7 crore during its third weekend. If that happens, the film’s total box office collection could touch nearly Rs. 58 crore by the end of Sunday. Based on the current trend, the movie is expected to finish its theatrical run around Rs. 75 crore gross in India.
The performance is considered strong for a musical drama in India. Earlier, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour had collected around Rs. 13 crore, while Bohemian Rhapsody earned nearly Rs. 7 crore during its release in 2018.
With these numbers, Michael has emerged as a HIT film. It has become the third Hollywood HIT release of the year after Project Hail Mary and Lee Cronin’s The Mummy. Interestingly, none of these films belonged to the usual franchise or superhero category that generally performs well in India. Another recent Hollywood release, The Devil Wears Prada 2, is also doing reasonably well at the box office and is expected to emerge as a successful release.
