Harry Potter is already facing its first major cast shake-up before the show has even premiered. Actress Gracie Cochrane, who was cast as Ginny Weasley in HBO’s upcoming reboot of the beloved wizarding franchise, has officially exited the series ahead of season 2. According to statements released by both Cochrane’s family and HBO, the young actress stepped away from the role due to “unforeseen circumstances.”
“Gracie Cochrane made the challenging decision to step away from her role as Ginny Weasley in the HBO Harry Potter series after season 1,” the family shared in a statement.
They added that her time working on the project had been “truly wonderful” and thanked the production team for creating “an unforgettable experience.”
HBO also addressed the departure publicly, saying:
“We support Gracie Cochrane and her family’s decision not to return for the next season of HBO’s Harry Potter series, and we are grateful for her work on season 1 of the show.”
The role of Ginny Weasley will now be recast for future seasons.
The news arrives months before the series’ official debut, which is scheduled for Christmas 2026 on HBO.
Season 1, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, will adapt the first book in J. K. Rowling’s seven-book fantasy series. HBO plans to adapt each novel into its own full television season.
The show stars: Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy.
The adult cast includes John Lithgow, Nick Frost, Janet McTeer, and Paapa Essiedu. Ginny Weasley’s character becomes significantly more important in the second book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, meaning HBO will now need to find a new actress before filming season 2 begins later this year.
The series has already been renewed for a second season despite the first season not yet airing.
Original Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has also shown support for the reboot cast. Earlier this year, Radcliffe revealed he personally wrote a letter to young star Dominic McLaughlin wishing him luck on taking over the iconic role of Harry Potter.
McLaughlin later described receiving the letter as “insane,” saying he tried to stay calm while reading it on a train.
