Ameesha Patel Reveals the Real Reason Gadar Became a Blockbuster and Her Story About Sunny Deol Will Melt Your Heart

As the iconic film celebrates its 25th anniversary, actress Ameesha Patel looked back on its incredible journey and shared her thoughts on why the film remains so loved even today.

In a recent interview Variety India, Ameesha admitted that neither she nor the team expected Gadar to become such a massive success. She said they had no idea the film would leave such a deep impact on audiences and continue to be celebrated decades later. According to her, the success story became even bigger when Gadar 2 arrived years later and turned into a huge box office phenomenon. The actress said the overwhelming response to the sequel proved that the love for Tara Singh and Sakina had never faded.

Talking about what made Gadar so special, Ameesha explained that the innocence and purity of the love story played a major role. She believes audiences connected deeply with the emotional bond between Tara and Sakina. The actress also said that both she and Sunny Deol are naturally shy, simple and reserved people in real life, and that sincerity reflected in their performances on screen. She feels that their genuine personalities helped make the characters more believable and relatable.

Ameesha described Gadar as a powerful love story about a man who is willing to do anything for his wife and family. She said Tara Singh’s unconditional love and determination touched the hearts of viewers and made them emotionally invested in the story. The actress also fondly remembered her first meeting with Sunny Deol. She described him as one of the kindest and most gentle people she has worked with. Ameesha shared that Sunny made her feel comfortable from day one and always treated her with respect and care. He patiently supported her during scenes that required multiple retakes and was always encouraging. She recalled that their time on set was filled with laughter, jokes and friendly moments, including stealing food from each other’s plates.

Ameesha also revealed that when her debut film Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai became a blockbuster during the shooting of Gadar, Sunny was one of her biggest supporters and celebrated her success wholeheartedly.

Directed by Anil Sharma, Gadar tells the story of Tara Singh, a Sikh truck driver, and Sakina, a Muslim woman, who fall in love during the Partition of India in 1947. Their emotional journey, filled with sacrifice, courage and love, remains one of the most memorable stories in Indian cinema history.
