Spider Man: Brand New Day continued its impressive run at the Indian box office by collecting approximately Rs. 54.50 crore gross and Rs. 45 crore nett on Friday. Although the film saw a 23 per cent drop compared to its record breaking opening day on Thursday, the overall performance remains strong and is in line with expectations for a film that began its release in the middle of the week.
After 2 days, the Tom Holland starrer has collected around Rs. 125 crore gross and Rs. 103 crore nett in India. Based on its current trend, the superhero film is expected to comfortably cross Rs. 250 crore during its extended 4 day opening weekend, making it one of the biggest Hollywood releases ever in the country.
The reported figures do not include 3D charges, which is the standard method followed in Indian box office reporting. When those charges are added, the film’s total collection after 2 days reaches approximately Rs. 137 crore gross. Some official reports include only part of the 3D charges, but including the complete amount gives a clearer picture of the film’s overall earnings and also matches the reporting style followed in many international markets.
The 23 per cent decline on Friday is considered a normal trend for a movie released on a weekday. Industry expectations suggest that collections are likely to increase again over the weekend as more audiences visit theatres. If that happens, the film could return to opening day numbers or even perform better over Saturday and Sunday.
The film performed especially well in major metro cities such as Mumbai and Delhi NCR, where collections dropped by only 10 to 20 per cent from the opening day. However, the decline was slightly higher in the southern states and mass market centres across the Hindi belt, where collections fell by around 30 to 35 per cent. This pattern is commonly seen with large Hollywood releases in India.
With its outstanding start, Spider Man: Brand New Day has already become the biggest Hollywood opener in the country. Whether it goes on to become the highest grossing Hollywood film of all time in India will largely depend on how well it performs on Monday and in the days that follow.
