Karuppu had an excellent first weekend at the Indian box office and delivered the biggest opening numbers of Suriya’s career. The film collected around Rs. 31.25 crore on Sunday alone, showing a strong 17 per cent jump compared to Saturday. This is now the highest single day collection for any Suriya film, even bigger than the opening day collections of his earlier releases.
With this performance, Karuppu finished its first weekend with an estimated Rs. 76.75 crore gross in India. The total itself is higher than the lifetime collections of all Suriya films released after Singam 3 in 2017. The film started slowly on Friday morning but picked up strongly as the day progressed. By the evening, trade analysts had already started noticing strong audience support. The positive trend continued on Saturday and became even stronger on Sunday.
The film performed well across multiple markets. Tamil Nadu remained the biggest contributor with around Rs. 18.75 crore collected on Sunday alone. The state’s total weekend collection reached around Rs. 46.25 crore. The Telugu dubbed version also performed strongly and collected around Rs. 12.50 crore over the weekend. Karnataka and Kerala also delivered good support to the film.
Karuppu is now being called a SUPER HIT and could eventually reach BLOCKBUSTER status depending on how stable the collections remain during weekdays and in the coming weeks. For Suriya, this marks an important comeback at the box office after a long period without a major theatrical success. His last clear HIT film was Singam II released in 2013.
During the early 2010s, Suriya was considered one of the biggest stars in South Indian cinema and delivered several successful films regularly. However, the following years proved difficult at the box office. Some films opened well but failed to continue because of weak audience response, while others received appreciation but could not attract a strong opening. Two of his critically appreciated films were also released directly on digital platforms during the COVID period, limiting their theatrical potential.
With Karuppu, things appear to have finally come together for the actor, both in terms of audience response and box office collections.
