To mark 40 years since the release of the iconic 1986 film Top Gun, Paramount Pictures will bring both the original movie and its sequel back to theatres in India. Starting 15 May 2026, audiences will be able to watch these films on the big screen again for one week only. This gives both longtime fans and younger viewers a chance to experience the story in cinemas.
The original film follows a group of skilled Navy pilots training at the Fighter Weapons School known as Top Gun. These pilots compete with each other while pushing their limits in the air. Tom Cruise plays Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a confident and talented pilot who becomes one of the most memorable characters in film history.
The re release also includes the sequel Top Gun Maverick. This film became a huge success, earning more than $1.5B worldwide and becoming the number 1 movie of 2022. It is also the highest grossing film in the history of Paramount Pictures. Watching both films together creates a complete experience of the story across two generations.
In Top Gun Maverick, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell continues his career after more than thirty years of service. He avoids promotions that would keep him grounded and instead continues flying as a test pilot. He is later assigned to train a group of Top Gun graduates for a dangerous mission. During this time, he meets Lt Bradley Bradshaw, known as “Rooster,” who is the son of his late friend Lt Nick Bradshaw, also called “Goose.”
The original film was directed by Tony Scott and features actors like Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, Kelly McGillis, Meg Ryan and Tom Skerritt. The sequel is directed by Joseph Kosinski and includes a cast with Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris and Val Kilmer.
Both films will be available in Indian cinemas from 15 May 2026 for one week.
