British band Coldplay has just announced a final show in India as part of the ongoing Music of the Spheres World Tour. The Birmingham, UK-based band will head to Ahmedabad on January 25, 2025, where they will perform at the Narendra Modi Stadium. It will be the biggest performance of Coldplay in India so far. The Ahmedabad show’s tickets open for sale on November 16 at 12 pm IST.
Three shows by the band had been planned for January 18, 19 and 20 at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. It may be mentioned that tickets for these Mumbai concerts had gone on sale last month, selling out in minutes, even as demand was so high that virtual queues reportedly ran into millions, leaving many fans without tickets. Authorities had to intervene as ticket scalping issues arose when tickets were resold at inflated prices.
Maharashtra’s Cyber Wing today issued a notice to BookMyShow requesting additional, more stringent measures like name-based ticketing to stop the online ticket reselling at inflated prices. This comes after a spate of complaints by fans on social media detailing difficulties in booking tickets, alleging unresponsive websites and even ticket hoarding. Reasonably priced tickets were allegedly sold by scalpers as high as ten times face value, leaving fans worried.
In addition, a PIL is pending in the Bombay High Court for establishing guidelines to check ticket scalping and irregularities in major events. The PIL, after issues surfaced in the sales of Coldplay tickets, seeks stringent rules to ensure fairness of access to fans and prevent black marketing in large-scale events.
This highlights the importance of improved controls on ticketing so that fans receive fair access to tickets, especially with the gargantuan demand high-profile events continue to attract in India.
