The third instalment in Marvel’s Venom series, Venom: The Last Dance, continues to soar all over the world and does quite well in India too. With Tom Hardy starring as Eddie Brock/Venom, the film opens with Rs 4.65 crore on Thursday, and by Day 4, it collects more than Rs 31 crore. According to Sacnilk, Venom 3 had a healthy growth curve over the weekend. It took Rs 7.5 crore on Friday and collected Rs 9.5 crore on Saturday, estimated to take Rs 9.5 crore on Sunday. In India, success for the film came from its English and Hindi shows, the latter raking in almost 20% occupancy on both Sunday’s versions.
Internationally, The Last Dance did very well; it grossed $124 million over its opening weekend, with a strong $46 million from China. Despite good performances in the international market, the film had grossed only $51 million at the U.S. box office, far from the previous openings of $80.2 million in 2018 and $90 million for Venom: Let There Be Carnage in 2021.
Story-wise, Venom: The Last Dance is an emotionally poignant end for Eddie Brock and his symbiote friend, Venom. Venom was willing to sacrifice his existence in protection of Eddie and the world against the evil xenophage army, led by Andy Serkis’s Knull. This sacrifice destroyed the codex sealing away the fate of Knull and freeing Eddie from his convictions. This poignant final scene sees Eddie visiting New York City, fulfilling Venom’s dream and paying a special tribute to his memory.
Director Kelly Marcel has almost indicated that though The Last Dance marks an end for Venom, Knull marks a beginning towards a future threat, so possibilities within the Marvel universe are hinted. With significant Indian releases such as Singham Again and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 arriving soon, it remains to be seen how well Venom 3 will do in India close to the Diwali season.
