Harry Styles has stepped into a new sonic chapter with his fourth solo album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally., a project that leans heavily into the communal and emotional energy of late-night dance floors. Still, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally. shows Styles continuing to evolve as a pop artist willing to explore new textures and environments. If you grew up in the 90s, there’s a good chance one line still plays somewhere in your memory: “Nazar ke samne, jigar ke paas.” The song from the movie Aashiqui became one of the most recognizable love songs of its time. Sung by Kumar Sanu and Anuradha Paudwal, composed by Nadeem–Shravan, and written by lyricist Sameer Anjaan, the song defined the soft, emotional sound of the cassette era.

What makes the song even more interesting is how casually its most famous line was born.

Sameer once shared that the line didn’t come from a long writing session. It appeared during an ordinary walk. He and the composers Nadeem and Shravan had stepped out after watching a film at Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir theatre. As they were walking and talking, a phrase suddenly crossed his mind: “Nazar ke samne, jigar ke paas.”

That simple line captured a feeling so perfectly that the rest of the song followed quickly. According to Sameer, the lyrics were written in roughly twenty minutes.

There’s something beautifully fitting about that story. The line itself is uncomplicated. It roughly means, “Right in front of my eyes, close to my heart.” No heavy metaphors. No elaborate poetry. Just a direct expression of affection. That simplicity was exactly what connected with listeners.

In the early 90s, songs had to live on cassette players, radio shows, and people’s memory. If a lyric stayed in your head after hearing it once, it had already won half the battle. Sameer had a knack for writing lines that sounded natural, almost like something you might say to someone you love. “Nazar ke samne, jigar ke paas” felt personal, like a confession whispered rather than a lyric performed.
