The maverick filmmaker Yash Chopra, who entertained us for 50 years with his films, made the announcement of his retirement today on his 80th birthday during a special live chat hosted by Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan. Yash Chopra declared in front of the media waalas present that his latest film JAB TAK HAI JAAN starring Shahrukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, is his last film. And he will not direct any film post-JAB TAK HAI JAAN.
'JAB TAK HAI JAAN will be my last film as a director. I have got enough love in my 50 years of career. The industry has given me so much. Now I want to encourage and motivate young talent – be it actors, directors or other technicians. I feel accomplished today.'
He further adds, 'Jis tarah aap khaane mai aapki sabsey man pasand dish sabsey last khaate ho waise hi JAB TAK HAI JAAN, I think, is that film which I want to savor in last. I feel satisfied with JAB TAK HAI JAAN. It has given immense happiness.'
To which an emotional & shocked Shahrukh added, 'If I would've known that this film will make you so much happy I would have made things bitter (jokes). On serious a note, it feels a moment of history…it is a happy sadness moment…I am satisfied, happy and touched. It's an emotional moment as I began my career with this banner with Yashji and now my upcoming film JAB TAK HAI JAAN is his last film. Together we've come a long way and spent 20 years. I would love him to continue but ultimately it's his decision and I stand by him.'
Yash Chopra directed Shahrukh Khan in DARR, DIL TOH PAGAL HAI, VEER-ZAARA and now in JAB TAK HAI JAAN.
