Suriya starrer Vishwanath & Sons saw a sharp drop in box office collections on Tuesday after an already average Monday. The film collected Rs. 6 crore on Day 5, taking its total India gross collection to Rs. 81.50 crore. Based on its current pace, the movie is expected to finish its first week at around Rs. 90 crore.
However, the latest numbers are not considered strong enough for a film made on a large budget. The biggest concern is the film’s performance in Tamil Nadu, which is Suriya’s home market. The movie fell below the Rs. 2 crore mark in the state on Tuesday, making its overall run there disappointing.
The film had opened with Rs. 17.75 crore on Friday and then recorded its strongest day on Saturday with Rs. 26.00 crore. Sunday brought in Rs. 23.25 crore, while collections dropped to Rs. 8.50 crore on Monday. The film then earned Rs. 6.00 crore on Tuesday.
The day wise India gross collections are as follows:
Friday: Rs. 17.75 cr.
Saturday: Rs. 26.00 cr.
Sunday: Rs. 23.25 cr.
Monday: Rs. 8.50 cr.
Tuesday: Rs. 6.00 cr.
Total: Rs. 81.50 cr.
While the film has struggled in Tamil Nadu, its performance in the Telugu states has been comparatively better. Vishwanath & Sons has collected Rs. 34 crore from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana so far, making the region its biggest contributor. If the film manages to maintain its collections there, it could still have a successful run in AP and TS. However, stronger business in those markets may not be enough to change the overall result.
The film also stars Mamitha Baiju and now needs a significant improvement in collections to remain competitive at the box office. Suriya had delivered a major blockbuster earlier this year with Karuppu, which crossed the Rs. 300 crore mark worldwide. Vishwanath & Sons, however, is currently performing at a much lower level.
The territorial India gross collections stand at Rs. 31.00 crore in Tamil Nadu, Rs. 34.00 crore in APTS, Rs. 9.75 crore in Karnataka, Rs. 5.75 crore in Kerala and Rs. 1.00 crore from the rest of India. This takes the overall India gross to Rs. 81.50 crore.
With the first week nearing its end, the film’s performance over the coming days will be important in deciding its final theatrical outcome.
